NAMATHU SOURATTIRA MOZHI

How should I start learning Sourashtram ?
If you know Tamil language, then click on ‘Learn Sourashtra Language - TAMIL’ link in
‘DOWNLOAD Essentials’ in right hand side bar. This ‘Sourashtra Pada Mala’ in PDF form is
very ideal for learning all the letters and then slowly read and write commonly used words and
sentences.
Others may download ‘LIPI Chart - English’.
To start with, please print out all the letters . Using pencil, eraser and note book start writing
each letter legibly until all letters are memorized and could be written legibly by hand.
Normally it takes 10 to 15 days of time at the rate of 30 to 45 mins every day.
After learning to write all letters, try writing your name, wife name, etc and other commonly
used simple words. And then using these building blocks of words, start writing simple setneces
and read yourself to check if it resembles your ’spoken’ language.
Once comfortable with memorizing all the letters, you may slowly start reading the content in
this site. Please be patient to combine the lettters to identify each word. You may even take 10
minutes to read one standard sentence. So don’t be surprised. It will be slow in the beginning
and over the period , more and more continuous reading practice will increase the reading
speed. After one or two weeks of continuous reading of our language, the speed to read one
sentences will become much faster . ie 1 standard sentence per min or so.
The above are suggestions only based on my direct experiences. There will always be variations
in the speed of learning from one individual to another.
Best wishes to all learners of our SOURASHTRA LANGUAGE !!

when I open the Tamil Padamala I get only Roman, but not sourshtra lipi.
Pl. advise.

Thanks for pointing out the issue. I reproduced the issue and found it is due to FONT issue. I
discovered that ‘Sourashtra Pada Mala’ book is created using KUBER FONT. I have just
included KUBER FONT under ‘ESSENTIAL Downloads’.
Please download the Kuber Font and save it to \\Windows\fonts directory. If there are still
problems in reading the ‘Padamala’, please let me know.

UPAMANYU says:
I  do not use KUBER font. Sourashtra Padamala of Sri Thada Subramanyam is not upto my
expectation.
Standard Text Book is yet to be written.
Sri Ramarai Sourashtra Vachakamu - Book I was authored and published by
Sri O.K.Ramanandam, B.A.,B.T. in 1961.
Later Sreshta Sourashtra Sahitya Sabha, Madurai published the same book with some
modification as 2nd Revised Edition in 1974.
The First edition contained some notes in Tamil to help the Readers to learn Sourashtram by
self study. But the revised one does not contain not even a single word in Tamil as explanation.
So it is difficult to learn the script by self study.
Though in the outer wrapper, it is printed as First Book, Second Book, Third Book, Fourth
Book, Fifth Book, Sourashttra Vyakaranam, Sourashtra Niti Sambu, so far no step is taken by
Sreshta Sourashtra Sahitya Sabha to produce Text Books from 2 to 5.
Of Course, Sourashtra Niiti shambu has been printed in Tamil Script in 1995 with meaning in
Sourashtram.
Another small book ‘BHASHA TURNI” PADYAM-VYAKARANAM BHAG - Book I
was published by Sreshtha Sourashtra Sahitya Sabha, Madurai.
This book is also printed in Tamil Script, because at that time Sourashtra Font was not available
in Computers. In this book, a sample of Poems taken from Sourashtra Niiti shambu, Sourashtra
Sangita Ramayanam, Sriman Natana Gopala Nayaki Seamin, Sourashtra Nandi Nighantu,
Sourashtra srimath Bhagavath Gita and skeleton grammar of sourashtra language are given.
There was no attempt to teach Sourashtra Language to a non-sourashtran.
It is explained to Sourashtra native speakers as to how to write Sourashtra Language in
Sourashtra Script, Tamil Script and Roman Script.
Of course it can be written in Telugu and Kannada Scripts also.
But use of Devanagari Script is possible only if 7 additional symbols are provided to represent
the peculiar sounds available in Sourashtra Language.
Though one or two books were printed in Devanagari without additional symbols, they are not
liked by Sourashtrans, for they do not know the Devanagari Script.
Now in Computer Sourashtra Font [Suresh] is available. But even in Suresh font, two symbols
are missing.
They are ‘half yakaram’ - a symbol to represent the sound ‘yaa’ as in the English words Cat,
Mat , Rat etc.
Another one is nasal marker which occurs in questions.
Ex. tumi jiyaashaa~? It is a dot over a chandra bindu available in Devanagari Script.
So unless these two symbols are added in Suresh font, it will not be possible to write Sourashtra
language perfectly.
Attempts are yet to be made to produce a fresh set of fonts preferably with the name
RAMARAI, incorporating all sounds and with aesthetic look.
I hope somebody will come forward to produce new set of fonts for Sourashtra Language.
Till such time, Suresh font without recourse has to be used.
UPAMANYU, 8th MARCH 2009.
please give the seven sounds for which Devanagari symbols are missing.
K.V.Pathy
UPAMANYU says:
The sever symbols missing is Devanagari are:
short vowel ‘e’
short vowel ‘o’
aspirated ‘n’ = nha
aspirated ‘m’ = mha
aspirated ‘r’ = rha
aspirated ‘l’ - lha
half yakaram to represent the sound of ‘A’ as in the English words cat, mat etc.
UPAMANYU says:
The proverb is “riiN khaDi singarlatte hOnaa”
That is you should not indulge in doing ‘make up’ to your face and body by borrowed
materials.
In other words, everything you should own.
UPAMANYU says:
once you borrow, when you will repay?
So, it is better to avoid borrowing.
UPAMANYU says:
We should make wide publicity of this site.
At least they can make comments in English, in this column.
Administrator is to look into this idea.
UPAMANYU says:
the purpose of this site is to flourish Sourashtra Script.
More people should visit this site and learn Sourashtra script which will boost our image.
What we have failed to introduce in School curriculum, we can do it through this site.
இப்படிப்பட்ட வலைதலங்களுக்குப்போய் மொழி ஆற்றல் பெறும்படி எல்லோரையும் கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறேன்.
